Mission

The Division of Energy, Mineral and Land Resources seeks to promote the wise use and protection of North Carolina's land and geologic resources.

Overview

Within the division, the Land Quality Section regulates and provides technical assistance related to mining, dams, sediment and erosion control and stormwater management. The division's Energy Section includes oil and shale gas management, transportation, renewables, and the implementation of the State Energy Program and Weatherization Assistance Program. The N.C. Geological Survey performs scientific investigations, provides technical assistance and maps the state’s geological resources. The division as a whole supports public geoscience education.
